About The Nairobi Waldorf School Trust - Lavington Campus
The Nairobi Waldorf School Trust (NWST) – Lavington Campus is a dedicated institution offering the unique, globally recognized Waldorf Education within the heart of Nairobi. While the Trust’s history began in 1998, the Lavington Campus holds the distinction of having opened its doors earlier, in 1994, marking a significant milestone in bringing this holistic curriculum to Nairobi’s community. NWST operates as a non-profit, parent-led Trust, embodying a collective commitment to creative, purpose-filled learning.
The Distinctive Waldorf Curriculum and Early Years Focus
The Waldorf philosophy, developed by Rudolf Steiner, emphasizes the balanced development of the whole child—intellectually, emotionally, and practically. The Lavington Campus focuses on the foundational years, ensuring a gentle and robust start to education.
Developmentally Appropriate: The curriculum is introduced to align with the child’s natural cognitive and emotional development. Formal academics start at age six, prioritizing early childhood development through play, imitation, and exploration in Kindergarten.
Head, Heart, Hands Approach: Learning is balanced across three spheres: Thinking (Head) for intellectual growth; Feeling (Heart) for emotional and moral resilience; and Willing (Hands) for practical skills and artistic expression (music, painting, handwork).
Curriculum Adaptation: While rooted in international Waldorf pedagogy, the curriculum is carefully adapted to be highly relevant to the Kenyan cultural and social context.
Values, Community, and Founding Spirit
The Lavington Campus embodies the pioneering spirit of the Trust’s founders—including teachers from Germany—and maintains a strong, nurturing community.
Core Values: NWST is guided by values of Reverence, Imagination, Inventiveness, and Diversity. We strive to nurture balanced, free individuals capable of critical, creative, and flexible thinking.
Teacher-Student Bond: A hallmark of Waldorf education is the potential for the Class Teacher to accompany the students throughout their primary journey (Class 1 through 8), creating a profoundly supportive and stable educational relationship.
Inclusivity: The school is non-sectarian and welcomes students from all backgrounds and nationalities, actively promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within its community.
The Nairobi Waldorf School Trust – Lavington Campus provides a unique, heart-centered education in a stable, community-driven environment in one of Nairobi’s most established suburbs.
