About Kianda Secondary School
Kianda School is a highly respected private girls’ secondary school in Nairobi, Kenya, founded on a strong legacy of academic excellence, values-based education, and personalized learning. The school was established in 1977 by the Kianda Foundation in response to growing demand from alumnae of Kianda College, Africa’s first multiracial college, who desired the same quality of mentorship and personal attention for their daughters.
The idea to establish Kianda School was inspired by former students who deeply valued the formative experience they had received at Kianda College. As documented by Miss Olga Marlin in To Africa with a Dream, alumnae—including Naomi Waiyaki—expressed a strong desire for a secondary school that would mirror the close guidance, character formation, and academic support they had enjoyed. This vision was strongly encouraged by Monsignor Escrivá, whose support played a key role in bringing the school to life.
📘 Kianda School officially opened its doors on 9th January 1977 with 40 Form One students, among them Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, the First Lady of Kenya. From its modest beginnings, the school has grown into a vibrant learning community of approximately 900 students, while maintaining its core commitment to individualized attention and holistic development.
The school is firmly grounded in values that promote integrity, responsibility, service, and leadership, shaping young women to become confident, principled, and socially responsible citizens. Kianda School follows the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), offering a well-rounded academic approach that nurtures critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and lifelong learning skills. Learners engage across STEM, Social Sciences, Arts, and Sports Science, allowing them to discover and develop their full potential.
What distinguishes Kianda School is its strong heritage, emphasis on personal mentorship, and unwavering focus on educating the whole person. Parents seeking a girls’ secondary school in Kenya that blends academic rigor with character formation often find Kianda School to be a trusted and enduring choice.
